What is the best Rutebaga recipe?

If you didn't know- Rutebaga is one of the better foods for your brain development, and I want to try to finally cook one up.


Do you have a favorite recipe, especially one that ';works everytime';?What is the best Rutebaga recipe?
Oh, I love Rutabaga's. They are a butt to peel and cut up. But delicious! You can cook them several ways. Cut them up into small pieces, about 1 - 2 '; and....





Boil them in seasoned water- Cover with water, add salt, pepper and a little olive oil. Boil until tender.





Saute' them in olive oil with a sliced sweet onion and a couple of cubed potatoes. Season with salt, pepper, and a little garlic. Cook until tender.











RUTABAGA AU GRATIN (you can add turnip roots too)





6 tbsp. melted butter, divided


1/4 c. all purpose flour


2 c. milk


1 c. (1/4 lb.) shredded cheddar cheese


1 tsp. salt


1/8 tsp. pepper


4 c. diced cooked rutabagas


1/2 c. bread crumbs





Combine 1/4 cup butter and flour in a heavy saucepan over low heat. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually stir constantly. Gradually stir in milk; cook over medium heat stirring constantly, until smooth and thickened. Add cheese and seasonings, stirring until the cheese is melted. Place rutabaga in lightly greased 1 1/2 quart casserole; top with sauce. Combine bread crumbs with remaining 2 tablespoons butter; sprinkle over casserole. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.














RUTABAGA CAKE





3 eggs, beaten


1/2 c. melted butter, butter or oil


3/4 c. buttermilk


2 tsp. vanilla


2 c. all-purpose flour


1 1/2 c. sugar


1 tsp. soda


2 tsp. cinnamon


1/2 tsp. salt


1 (13 1/4 oz.) can crushed pineapple, drained


1 c. shredded, raw rutabaga


1/2 c. chopped walnuts


1 c. flaked coconut





Combine eggs, melted butter, buttermilk and vanilla in a large bowl. Sift together flour, sugar, soda, cinnamon and salt; add to creamed mixture. Drain pineapple well. Fold pineapple, rutabaga, walnuts and coconut into batter. Turn into a greased and floured 9 cup bundt pan and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 40 to 50 minutes or until cake tests done.

Rutabaga Casserole





INGREDIENTS


4 rutabagas


4 carrots


2 tablespoons white sugar


2 tablespoons butter


1/4 cup milk (optional)





DIRECTIONS


Peel rutabagas and cut into large cubes. Place in cold salted water, and bring to a boil. When fork tender, drain.


Mash rutabagas with grated carrots, sugar, and butter.


Place in oven at low temperature to keep warm. Cover so that the dish will not dry out. If it does, stir in a little milk.
I love rutebaga. Because it is so difficult for me to peel and cut, I cook it unpeeled in the microwave, left whole and on a microwaveable dish. Cook it on high and check on it every 15 minutes. It is done when fork tender. When cooled, then peel it, mash it and add some butter, salt and pepper and mash it with a beater until very fine. Some people add brown sugar to it at this stage and bake it for about half an hour at 350, however, I like it served simply with salt, pepper and butter. It is great in stews as well and if using it as a vegetable in a slow cooker, place the raw pieces under the meat because the rutebaga takes longer to cook.

I never knew that, we enjoy steaming it and putting a little butter, sea salt and fresh cracked pepper on ours.
My mom makes this every year around the holidays; we call it Swede(what they call rutebagas in England) %26amp; Carrots:


Take equal about of carrot %26amp; rutebaga %26amp; put ina large pot of water.


Boil until soft or you can poke a knife through them.


Drain %26amp; put in a dish with 1/2 stick butter, salt %26amp; pepper to taste %26amp; dill.


Mash it all together.
